Our next Steampunk Month giveaway is a twofer! Tor Books has donated twenty copies each of Stephen Hunt’s The Court of the Air, now in mass market, and its sequel, The Kingdom Beyond the Waves. The Court of the Air is a steampunk thriller, complete with suspense, conspiracies, and adventure:
When streetwise Molly Templar witnesses a brutal murder at the brothel she has recently been apprenticed to, her first instinct is to run back to the poorhouse where she grew up. But there she finds her fellow orphans butchered, and it slowly dawns on her that she was the real target of the attack. For Molly is a special little girl, and she carries a secret that marks her out for destruction by enemies of the state.
Oliver Brooks has led a sheltered existence in the backwater home of his merchant uncle. But when he is framed for his only relative’s murder he is forced to flee for his life, accompanied by an agent of the mysterious Court of the Air. Chased across the country, Oliver finds himself in the company of thieves, outlaws and spies, and gradually learns more about the secret that has blighted his life.
Soon Molly and Oliver will find themselves battling a grave threat to civilization, an ancient power thought to have been quelled millennia ago. Their enemies are ruthless and myriad, but the two orphans are also aided by indomitable friends in this endlessly inventive tale full of drama, intrigue, and adventure.
The Court of the Air is a rollicking adventure set in a fantastical Dickensian clockwork universe that will appeal to fans of Susanna Clarke and Philip Pullman.
I leave it to you to decide if you want to read the summary of the book’s sequel, The Kingdom Beyond the Waves, here (it inevitably contains some spoilers for the first book). And if you don’t win this one: Court of the Air is discounted 30% in the Tor.com Store until the end of the week!
The Rules: To get this giveaway, all you need to do is comment (once—duplicates won’t count) on this post. The winners will be selected at random. You have until noon EST on Friday, October 30th, to comment here. Please check your e-mail on this day—you have 24 hours to respond before I select a new winner.
Torie Atkinson’s favorite part of this book is that on the spine the Tor Books logo is zeppelinified with a basket hanging from it.

I love the Idea, even though it is a clear marketing push from Tor. Being a devoted Sci Fi reader for over 20 years I never read any of Stephen Hunt’s books. This will be thrilling – I hope I win, thanks.
I read all night at work and I’m always looking for new books to keep me awake. This series sounds awesome.
Yeah Books! Steampunk Bokks!
Alright, I’m the 205th person to comment! I soooo have a chance. But seriously, I love steampunk and I love reading. So I’d love to read these books!
I’ve been thinking about picking these up for a while now :)
I Want Them
I love competitions like this!
Looks like an Ideal chance to get into the Stephen Hunt ouvre! Can I win please? Hmmm?
Hmmm- these look interesting, and might be what I need as an intro to a new author (to me, anyway).
The review of my new novel
Passengers to Sentience
on thebookbag website says ‘the opening chapters have the hallmarks of a steampunk thriller’ which then becomes ‘a ripping yarn’… and in my opinion much more.
I apologise in advance to the competition organisers, however but if you want to learn more, go to scifiwriter1.webs.com
where you can also find some steampunk robot limericks!
Plus I’d really like to win these two Stephen Hunt books!
This series has been on my “must-read” list for a while…
If you like Terry Prachett’s Discworld books, you’ll like these.
Steam, vaporized water, used by the Human being to drive machines of steel, these machines conquered land & sea. The industrial revolution, a time in human history where steam was king! The technology revolution, the cyber age, electronics drive the human race forward powered by nuclear Reactors that generate heat, this heat is used to make steam, steam that powers the world in to the space age. Steam is still king!
Sounds like some good stuff.
I must admit I haven’t read Stephen Hunts books yet, to win two books would be a marvellous Christmas present indeed!
Excellent.
Awesome!
This could be convenient; I am looking forward to running a steampunk theme at our convention next year, ICON 35 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. First week of Novemeber, could use a chance to pre-educate.
I’d love to win these highly esteamed books!
Count me in.
Stephen Hunt is the author to look for now and in the years to come. Read his books.
It sounds great. I am going to download these free ebooks.

This sounds AMAZING. I am always trying to find new and interesting ways to motivate my 8th grade students to read.
This would be a great way for me to have my own copies again! My originals have been loaned out and passed on to people I don’t even know so if I could have new ones I could quit obsessing abt the ones that got away from me!
Thanks for the chance!
I’ll try my luck

(begins to cross every bit of me that will cross for good luck)
Thanks

Sounds great!!
I highly recommend “Prospero Lost” by L. Jagi Lamplighter, also published by TOR. Wonderful story and characters! And I have started ‘Court of Air,’ but have not yet finished it. But it is a library copy and as his books are hard to find in stores, I would enjoy winning! :)
I have read the first one of these and am about halfway through the second – I’d love to have my own copies sitting on the shelf instead of ones borrowed from the library!
Sounds great!
Yes Please
My boyfriend’s birthday is the 30th. Wouldn’t he be surprised to get these!

This looks like a great series, I’ve been trying to find a bookstore that carried it.

I was just looking for some “Steampunk” last week but, did not have a list of authors or titles with me. So will look next time I go to Barnes and Nobles unless of course I win the twofers.
this is an epic comment
I love Tor and I love Steampunk, so I would love to win these two books. No money for new books in this economy.
I would love to read his books, but i’m from Portugal, at the other end of the world. Am i elligible to win?

Like how to bravely to inspire
A free copy, or two, with this inquire
And hope that I have a great shot–
How could I ignore sucha great offer?
Steampunk has developed a very strong following of late. Whenever I see a steampunk book, it reminds me of the tv series Jules Verne.
Sounds like good reads. Been a fan of Steampunk for some time now.
Sign me up, please!
I’m just getting into steampunk (via a friend who’s writing a steampunk play), although I believe Jules Verne came in on the ground floor of this genre.
Too many books, so little time — and always something new to discover! As long as I don’t end up in Burgess Meredith’s Twilight Zone predicament I’m doing okay!
I read the first book in this series and absolutely loved it. I think this is one of the most best, top-notch steampunk books out there. Very imaginative and fun to read. a real page turner. Can’t wait to read the next book- but if i win them both, all the better.
Had trouble posting, decided to “try again” and now it is working. I have followed Stephen and his Crowsnest forever. I love his take on life. I would, of course, also like to win his books.
I’m there man.
Great giveaway!
I loved the rise of the Iron moon and would love to get more of Stephens books
What the world needs now is more steampunk!

Fingers and toes crossed, also eyes.
Suspense, conspiracies, and adventure! What more could a girl reader want, particularly when her local library is particularly light of books with a sffnal orientation?
Bring on the steampunk!
Another title sure to impress.
I have been meaning for a long time to try this series. Winning it would be even better :)
These are on my “to get list”, so to get them for free would be a bonus and they would get bumped up the “to read pile” by my bed :)

The Covers alone are steamy enough. What slight twists to history might we see? Butterfly’s wings have flapped more than once to sweep us away in these tales.
Delicious! Would love to get my hands on these!
These do sound fantastic!
I have no idea what ‘Steampunk’ means. I am so uncultured. I need to win these books or remain in the dark.

I’ve been looking forward to getting into the steampunk genre for a while – these look like a good start!
Sounds like something I should be reading.
Fantasy, SF, and steampunk all rolled up in one. Sounds interesting. Love to see how well Mr. Hunt does it.
I especially like the covers, they give the right feel for this kind of book. (probably, since I haven’t read them yet…)
Fantastico!
I’m hoping to win this set.
To read, to read a book would be the greatest thing. to read a book in front of a warm fireplace, with a glass of wine.
Random thoughts for a random choosing.
Gary

Has it gone noon yet – maybe I need a new watch?
I could use some new books. I need something to distract me from my studies!
Hmm I don’t think I posted right the first time I tried. I would love to read these.
I’ve been meaning to buy BOTH of those books for a year or two, but my meager student budget has prevented it. And Steven has promised to autograph them for me when I manage to acquire them.
Furthermore, I see I have exactly 13 minutes to get my comments in before the deadline. Seems a propitious number. Two free books, please.
Oops. That should have been “Stephen,” not Steven. Well, I never claimed we were close. I’m sure I’ll not make that mistake again once I have the books before me.
I post
Sounds like an interesting read. Would love to win!

I’ve been coverting these fine tomes for a while, to win them would be grand!
I love to read just slightly less than I like to continue breathing!

I’d love to try a new fantasy/sf series, and free fits my budget. If I win, I will also be reading the book(s) over the phone to a shut-in older lady, who I read to almost every night (right now we’re doing “Lord of Light”, we’ve read all the Garrett books, Callahan stories, Nightside, Harry Potter, Temeraire, and many more…)
I missed the comment date for the free books. I hate it. I missed the article in my inbox and it was there on my birthday!!!!!! ARGHHHHH!!!!!!Well, good for someone. Free books are always a good deal. They look great!
I like how the covers fit the subject. Cool.
